who affixes them, and then, by means of a simple emboss-
ing machine, impresses on them the proper de te. Far from

this being a process involving delay, I learn from the
Superintendent that four thousand such stamps can if
necessary be affixed and over-embossed in a working day
of of hours.
These adhesive stamps shew the value only, and run,
as do the impressed do. mentioned above, from 3d to 100.
I enclose specimens over-embossed as described.

Where tens of thousands of stamped documents are ra-
quired at one time, they could not replace the impressed
stamps referred to under A, but, where the number required
is not of such magnitude, the Superintendent Mr Adams

is of opinion that the system which involves their use,
and simultaneous ov r-embossment with the date, is, from
every point of view, the most desirable.
In this opinion I understand Mr Colls to concur, and
believe it to be the intention of the Inland Revenue De-
paerment to extend the system to other branches of a stamp-
ing ere long.

Particulars as to both of these points will be found in
the correspondence with the Crown Agents forwarded here-
with.
I may at once say that I am not satisfied with any
of the sketches submitted by Messrs De Le Rue, as it is
evident that, where the space left for stamping is small,
or where several stamps have to be affixed, the size of
the die proposed by them would render it difficult if not
impossible of employment. I am informed by Mr Colls that
new dies are about to be issued to the Stock Exchange
office, which will be double dated and will impress the
date/
